I Write Like…

This has been going around the blogosphere, and I thought it would be fun. I submitted 2 posts to see if they would be consistent.

The results (which brought a smile to my face):

1. David Foster Wallace-Probably my favorite contemporary fiction author, and one of the most brilliant writers ever.  He died (suicide) in 2008, way too early. If you haven’t read Infinite Jest, you should. It was named among Time’s All Time 100 Novels. Buy Infinite Jest from Amazon.

I Write Like by Mémoires, Mac journal software. Analyze your writing!

2. Douglas Adams-Author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Absolute classic, and I haven’t read it (but it’s on my list). Buy The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy from Amazon.

Fun stuff!

Back from Vacation

It’s always hard to get back into the swing of things after a vacation. I think it is especially true after this vacation since it was our first true vacation in a while.

I didn’t check Google Reader or my blog stats once all week. It was wonderful! No offense to any of you guys, of course. It was just nice to unplug as much as we were able-I did have to check the weather (given the hurricane and tropical depression that bookended our stay-we missed it all thankfully!), get directions and perform other mundane iPhone functions.

A few highlights:

  • The Libster had a blast feeding ducks, dolphin watching, and playing in the “wawa” (she’s still asking if we can go to the beach).
  • Finding an isolated, uninhabited area of the beach with the wife and kiddo to hunt seashells and take a few photos.
  • I bought my first fishing license ever and caught a (non-keeper) trigger fish (probably the largest fish caught by anyone in our party, but returned whence it came-not even a photo to commemorate the catch :(   )

Writer’s Block Blog

This may be something of an oxymoron, but I’ve been contemplating writing a writer’s block blog: a place to write about writer’s block.

I actually don’t feel blocked at the moment, rather somewhat overwhelmed by having so much I want to write about. But, I think a place for writers to share their angst would be a welcomed place to hang out.

The idea has an interesting beginning. I was observing the artists at our church do “art fusion,” where each artist begins a sketch, painting, etc., then they rotate and add their respective take to each piece. The progression of it all is quite amazing. And it struck me that this would be something that could be useful for writers.

I have numerous unfinished books, stories, and other projects that could benefit from a shot fresh perspective. And I doubt I’m alone in this. I suspect finished works are more valuable than unfinished works even if credit has to be shared. “Writing fusion” is only one possibility. It would probably be mostly tips, thoughts, observations, and other random stuff for writers to chew on.

So, do you think anyone would participate (I’m not asking for commitments, just thoughts about the idea)?

Get Your Bible Study Tips Published

This seemed appropriate for my readers (from the Logos Blog):

Do you have some great Bible study tips that have helped you in your study of Genesis? We want to hear about them!

The theme of Bible Study Magazine’s November/December 2010 issue will be Genesis: Tower of Babel to Joseph. We want you to submit your best Bible study tips on Bible Study Magazine’s Facebook page. The best tips will be published in our two-year anniversary issue, Nov/Dec ’10!

I spend a lot of time in Genesis, as you may know, so I would also be interested in said study tips.

Good luck!

Complete Prayer System

Our pastor is away at a pastor’s conference, and he asked me to write his Monday Morning Review (his weekly blog) this week. I consider it an honor and a privilege when I’m permitted to do so.

In the past, I’ve taken a few liberties, but I’ve always been invited for a return engagement. This one, however, may get me fired from my substitute blogger job: Pastor Eric’s Complete Prayer System.

I may have had a little too much fun at his (and other pastors who employ acronyms as sermon tools) expense.

Top 50-Official and Unofficial

In case anyone missed it, like me until today, the Biblioblog Top 50 for December is out, officially and unofficially.

Personally, I prefer the unofficial rankings which have BOB at 11 (down 5 slots from #6 in November), while the official rankings have me at 17 (-11). Considering I took 3 weeks off in December, I can live with either.

I’m Back

It’s been a while since I’ve had a chance to post anything. Between work, campaign stuff, church, family, and infrequent internet access, blogging has taken a back seat. I’m looking forward to getting back in the groove, though.

I appreciate everyone continuing to comment and read (traffic was surprisingly steady), thanks. I hope you all have a very merry Christmas and wonderful new year.

2000 Comments

Thanks to Matt @ Broadcast Depth for BOB‘s 2000th comment on Not Exactly the Holiday Inn.

I haven’t been near a computer for a few days, so I’m glad I didn’t miss it. But, since I didn’t realize it was approaching so quickly, I didn’t have the confetti and balloons ready. I’m sorry, Matt.

So, to honor Matt for the 2000th comment, please check out his excellent blog.
