Holy Bible Mosaic (It’s Gorgeous) and Blog Tour Info
Posted by Peter in Bible, Bible Translations, Giveaways on September 22, 2009
How about that(?)! While I was writing my last post about the release of Holy Bible Mosaic, the mailman delivered my copy courtesy of Laura Bartlett at Tyndale House, and let me tell you it’s gorgeous.
Also, I want to announce that Beauty of the Bible will be hosting the Mosaic Blog Tour on Friday, October 23, 2009. Here are a few of the BOB Blog Tour Highlights:
- I will be conducting a Q&A with Paul Louis Metzger, a contributor to Holy Bible Mosaic who wrote the article for Pentecost Week 15 on the topic of Justice. How appropriate is that for a Bible blog hosted by a lawyer?
- I will post my review of the Holy Bible Mosaic.
- I will be giving away a certificate for a free copy of Holy Bible Mosaic redeemable at any bookstore, and anyone can win.
All of these are, of course, subject to change, but I will keep you posted.

Book Review-Every Man’s Bible
Posted by Peter in Bible, Book Reviews, Christianity on September 12, 2009
I want to thank Tyndale House for the courtesy copy of Every Man’s Bible: A Bible for Every Battle Every Man Faces.
Every Man’s Bible (NLT)
Tyndale House
ISBN 978-0-8423-7484-2
Buy Every Man’s Bible @ Amazon
For anyone familiar with and who benefited from Stephen Arterburn and Fred Stoeker’s Every Man’s Battle: Winning the War on Sexual Temptation One Victory at a Time, Tyndale’s Every Man’s Bible will be a familiar and complimentary study Bible.
Every Man’s Bible is jam packed with study notes, essays, sidebars, charts, graphs, and what the editors call “Personal Gold,” described as snapshots from Christian books about men living the Christian life.
The inserts and materials are non-traditional with topics like “What the Bible Says About Sports,” What the Bible Says About Getting Old,” What the Bible says about Failure,” “What the Bible Says About Money,” and “What the Bible says about Competition.” The language is contemporary and the graphics are prominent, appropriate for a younger male audience.
As a specialty Bible, it is broader in scope than you might initially think. I would actually describe it more as a “Life Application Study Bible” for men because the focus is on applying biblical principles to day-to-day life. In that respect, it works well. If I had a teenage boy, I would give it to him as required reading. Come to think of it, I might give it to my daughter when she reaches about 16 or 17 so she knows what to expect from her male peers and/or suitors.
The format is not for everybody. If you don’t like graphics, inserts, and other modern features that make publications busier, you will probably find the format distracting. I have written before that I personally prefer thinlines or text-only Bibles for personal reading and church going. However, I have several heaftier Bibles for at-home use. This Bible is a hybrid. It has the additional stuff of a large study Bible, but the size of a personal-sized, mid-width Bible.
The hardcover edition is sturdy and will hold up to considerable wear. It is also considerably less expensive. The Tu-tone, imitation leather edition is attractive and suited to young men. In other words, it’s a Bible a young man would look cool carrying.
I would highly recommend Every Man’s Bible for the any or all of the following:
- Young men (teens, college age)
- Newly married (men and women)
- Single men
- Parents of teenage boys
- Youth organizations
- Youth pastors and leaders
- Young women who want insight into men
- Newbie Christians (men and couples)
- Anyone counseling young men (or couples)
Good While They Lasted
Admittedly, my attention span is not what it once was, but I have read so many posts over the last several days about the following topics I just don’t think I can do it anymore (at least until after the holiday weekend):
- The TNIV/NIV and NIV 2011 controversy – I just don’t care anymore. When the 2011 NIV comes out, I’ll probably buy one because that’s just me, but, until then…
- Men vs. Women bibliobloggers – I have about 55 blogs in my Google Reader and 6 of them that I know for sure are women. There may be others, and there are team blogs (i.e., the NLT Blog) which have women on the team, but those percentages seem to be about on par with what the Biblioblog Top 50 has percentage-wise. I know I don’t discriminate intentionally, so I buy the whole numbers thing.
- That’s About It – I thought there were 3 things, but I can’t remember any others, so never mind. All other blog topics are fair game.
I hope everyone has a great weekend, and why wouldn’t you, it’s the first weekend of college football.

Okay, I Did It, I Bought a TNIV
Posted by Peter in Bible, Bible Translations, Christianity on August 19, 2009
At the prodding of various blogging buddies (TC, in particular) I finally broke down and bought a TNIV. I don’t think I was ever resistant to the idea, I just assumed my NIV (of which my wife and I collectively have 4-5) would suffice.
Also, to be quite honest, it’s hard to come across a copy of a TNIV in a book store around here. I do live in rural Texas after all, and most bookstores around here do not carry the TNIV. I shop online a lot, and I buy books online a lot, but I have never bought a Bible online (to the best of my recollection) because I need to look at, feel of and smell a new Bible if I’m going to buy it. I need to drool over it for a few weeks before I get up the gumption to buy it.
I just totally lied, because now that I think about it, I did buy a paperback JPS Hebrew/English Tanakh and a copy of David Stern’s Complete Jewish Bible a couple of years ago. My apologies for misleading you.
In any event, a Mardel opened recently in Abilene and it does carry a reasonable selection of TNIVs. I was thinking this Hebrews Bible Study would be a great way to try out a new Bible translation. But, I’m having second thoughts because (1) my other Bibles are already marked up and (2) I would bet money that no one attending will be reading a TNIV.
I’m also probably treading on thin ice because I was forbidden from purchasing any more Bibles until we move into a new house with more bookshelves. I better break the news about the purchase to my honey before she reads this post.
Bob MacDonald’s Translation of Job is Up
Posted by Peter in Bible, Bible Translations, Hebrew, Old Testament on July 9, 2009
Those of you familiar with BOB’s friend Bob will know that he has been publishing his translation of the book of Job on his blog Sufficiency.
Well, please join me in congratulating Bob because he has finished his translation. You can read through the translation on the blog or download the pdf version.
I’m no expert, but the feat alone is remarkable. I know he would welcome any comments or feedback. I have downloaded it, and if the first few chapters are any indication of the whole, it will be well worth your time.
Codex Sinaiticus is Online
Posted by Peter in Bible, Bible Translations, Christianity, New Testament, Old Testament on July 6, 2009
Back in October, I alerted you guys to the Codex Sinaiticus online, and it is now available at http://codexsinaiticus.org.
I had previously directed you to what is the homepage, http://codex-sinaiticus.net, but the “See the Manuscript” tab directs you to the .org site.
It is a great resource. Go have a look and play around a little, you won’t be disappointed.
