Personal Website Redesign

Peter M. LopezI’m in the middle of a site redesign for my law firm’s website: petermlopez.com. It is still in the very early stages, and content is sparse, but the basic look and feel is there. Please visit, have a look around, and feel free to offer thoughts, ideas, suggestions, tips, pointers, cash, or anything else you think might be helpful.

I am using SquareSpace for the site construction and hosting. The website tools are quite remarkable and easy to use. I would highly recommend it. If any of you are familiar with SquareSpace, please let me know, I would love to pick your brain about it.

My design skills are somewhat lacking, but I’ve played around with one of the templates I liked, and I think the foundation is there for a decent site.

What are you using your website for? To increase business or just to be a ready reference for people to check out as a back-up resource.

If you are using it to increase business, then you need to sell yourself rather write a bunch of facts.

If it is intended as a ready-reference or a back-up resource, then it’s great.

Remember: you have just a few seconds to grab people’s attention. That’s the nature of the internet.

And of course, since this is free advice, it may be worthless. But I would hire you and recommend you just because I like and trust you.

Thanks, Larry. It’s just a resource more than anything else. I appreciate your input.

LOL I’m sure it’s just the Information Architect in me (my day job), but it’s driving me nuts that your containers, widgets, etc. don’t align to the grid background!

Must be because I didn’t even notice that. I think I can play around with the padding to see if I can fix that, but I assume the background is just an image, so anytime I add anything to the widgets I might have the same problem. Thanks for noticing though, I’ll mess around with it.

Oh no, don’t waste your time. I just spend all day working in Visio, aligning wireframes to grids so I tend to notice such things…

Oh, wonderful, you’ve just saved me a lot of time with my glasses on top of my head staring at a computer screen far too closely. :)

I like how the two right columns are arranged and ordered. The only two things I saw on the main page are “puts their life in my hand.” I would say “hands” plural. Maybe that’s a variable thing though. And I think the red news headers are way too big, especially because they’re red.

You have a big job. That must be stressful but you must like it a lot to be able to handle it.

Nice catch on the “hands” thing. I’ve caught a few typos here and there, but not all of them I’m sure. I wondered about the red headers, but they are actually site wide, although there’s not enough to tell that yet. I might make them a little smaller, but I like the red, it’s much better than the template’s other colors which included an awful orange.

As far as liking it, it’s hard to say. I think I actually like the idea of “it” more than I like “it” itself.
