My fourteen-month-old daughter was watching this horrifyingly horrifying kids show this weekend, Yo Gabba Gabba. One of the lesson segments was: “Don’t bite your friends.” Complete with chant and everything:
Don’t…Don’t…Don’t bite your friends!
Sage advice to be sure, but it seemed somehow incomplete, especially since the segment that followed wasn’t, “or anyone else.”
Enemies and strangers beware.

I guess it’s easy to think that instruction is common sense, but children need to learn these things.

Indeed. I think children taken things literally, so if you don’t say, “or anyone else,” then you’re just asking for trouble.

I’m laughing because I’m with you. Let’s not bite anyone…not just our friends!

…and that’s all I’m saying.

But, what if it is sometimes necessary to bite your enemies? I mean, if it is needed? Like if someone tries to take away your internet connection.

No, Joel, don’t bite anyone (he says waiving a stern finger). Not at 14 months, maybe when she’s old enough to write a blog, I might lift this restriction, but for now, hush. No biting. No exceptions.

I can’t imagine that angel biting anyone – except for sore gum relief of course

Oh, no, of course not…it’s the other kids we need to be worried about.

Dude — you’ve got me laughing out loud with that one.
I think we need to turn this into a Discipleship Course at church!

Sounds like fun. Maybe next semester.
