Peter, if it’s the same thing you got that I got, then I see some humor there.
#2 by petermlopez on August 5, 2009 - 2:11 pm
Probably so, but there are a million variations thereon I’m sure, hence the “insert joke here.”
#3 by Matt on August 5, 2009 - 2:26 pm
Now that’s primitive!
#4 by petermlopez on August 5, 2009 - 2:34 pm
Indeed. Maybe “primitive” can become the new “phat,” or “sweet,” or “groovy.”

Modern Baptist churches are made from far more than four blocks. Hundreds, in fact, if they are not made of wood. Most even have roofs, too.
#6 by petermlopez on August 6, 2009 - 9:25 am
LOL! There’s an angle that didn’t immediately come to mind, but nice.

I happen to know a “Primitive Baptist Church” Preacher. Don’t think there are many of those churches left around.
#8 by petermlopez on August 6, 2009 - 9:27 am
So is it a subdenomination? If so, it is something I am unfamiliar with.

Indeed. Thanks, Edwin.

Peter, help me out here – what is the joke?
I mean, Primitive Baptist is like the CoC – no instruments, no payment of leaders, etc… Still not getting the joke.
#12 by petermlopez on August 6, 2009 - 2:55 pm
I’m not sure where to begin really… I guess it’s primarily in the “irony” of the name.
#13 by Mark Stevens on August 6, 2009 - 7:31 pm
PC – I am CoC and I get paid and we have instruments?
#14 by petermlopez on August 6, 2009 - 8:17 pm
Our CoC Pastors seem to get paid rather well, but instruments(?), that’s blasphemy around these parts
#15 by wilma on August 6, 2009 - 6:57 pm
Yes, it is a denomination….and yes I get the joke, however I am sure people who still consider themselves of that church affiliation probably don’t.
For Polycarp: Primitive as in old… “Old Baptist Church – 4 blocks…
Peter you might check “4 blocks down” and see what is there. There are not many of these churches left around. I had a friend whose family was “Primitive” and they eventually joined the Church of Christ. They are more like Church of Christ than Baptist.
Since I am “primiitive ie old I got the joke and got the sign. Hope this helps.

Wilma, it’s funny because the sign must be relatively new, it’s still in great shape and doesn’t appear faded at all. I just had to get a picture. I’m sure passers-by were wondering what in the world I was doing.

I happened to run across the conversation here and saw the picture of the sign that started it. I was amazed that I found this.
Peter, is the sign on US-180 going into Snyder, Texas? (I can’t imagine there being two such signs that look identical!)
I can appreciate the humor. Most people are actually unaware of the Primitive Baptist Church. I have included a URL ( http://www.texasprimitivebaptists.org ) that is a web application that I developed that enables you to query all PB churches in the database. This site is actually more of a history of the Primitive Baptist Church in Texas.
The URL for the web site for the actual church house that is “4 Blocks” from the infamous sign is: http://www.texasprimitivebaptists.org/snyder. I served them as Pastor from November, 2006 until last March.
Here’s another couple of sites that would have some good background on Primitive Baptists:
http://www.pb.org
http://www.primitivebaptist.org
I actually live in Arlington, TX and am pastor of the Waco Primitive Baptist Church (http://www.texasprimitivebaptists.org/waco) and Mt. Zion Primitive Baptist Church in Fort Worth (http://www.texasprimitivebaptists.org/mtzion ).
Y’all have a good day and keep laughing! We’ve GOT to have a sense of humor to get through!

That IS the very sign. I’m glad you found it.
